Zhejiang University
Zhejiang University ( ZJU ), located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province , is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China . It is a university jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province . It is among the first batch of universities selected for the ” Double First-Class ” initiative (Category A) , the ” Project 985 ” and the ” Project 211 “. It is also included in the Everest Plan , the Elite Plan , the 101 Plan , the Strong Foundation Plan , the 2011 Plan , the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program , the Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program , the Excellent Legal Talent Education and Training Program , the Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program , and is one of the first batch of demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform . It is a member of the C9 League , the Association of Pacific Rim Universities , the International Alliance for Engineering Education under the Belt and Road Initiative , the China University Planetary Science Alliance , and the Medical “Double First-Class” Construction Alliance . Zhejiang University was founded in 1897. Its predecessor was Qiushi Academy . In 1928 , the National Zhejiang University was built on the site of Qiushi Academy . In 1937, the entire university moved west and operated in Zunyi , Meitan and other places. In the autumn of 1946, it moved back to Hangzhou. In 1952, some departments were transferred to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities. The main part was reorganized into several institutions, which later developed into the original Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. In 1998, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University merged to form the new Zhejiang University. [3] [35]
As of December 2025, the university has 7 campuses, covering an area of 7.392 million square meters, with a building area of 470,000 square meters and a library collection of 8.22 million volumes; it has 7 faculties, 41 professional colleges (departments), 1 engineering college, and 2 Sino-foreign cooperative colleges, offering 103 undergraduate majors; it has 59 postdoctoral research stations, 62 first-level discipline doctoral degree programs, 18 doctoral professional degree programs, 62 first-level discipline master’s degree programs, and 35 master’s professional degree programs; it has 70,918 students and 9,787 faculty and staff.
